A tear in the shoulder or arthritis of the hip or knee is often identified by the patient as the cause for their pain. But, are they truly the cause?
Imaging testing such as X-ray or MRI has shown presence of tears or arthritic changes in individuals with no shoulder or knee pain.1,2,3 Just because you may have them does not mean you cannot live the life you want to live!
This is why a physical therapy examination is needed for your shoulders, hips, and knees. The exam assists you and all your care providers to choose the best course of action to get your life back.
Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) is a methodical system of assessment and treatment. For your shoulder, hip, or knee pain, MDT determines several key things to get you on the right path. Together, we can achieve the following:
1. We determine if your shoulder, hip, or knee pain is secondary to referred pain from your spine. Research has shown that pain in the shoulder and knee can be referred from your back 29% – 40% of the time. Hip pain is even more frequent at 71%.4, 5 If your past treatment experiences have not helped you, this may be the reason why.
2. We determine if your shoulder, hip, or knee pain can be treated conservatively and effectively through physical therapy. Issues that are correctly diagnosed as being local to the shoulder or knee can be resolved rather quickly within two weeks.5
3. Our method helps you to make certain that surgery is an appropriate option for you. Failed prior treatments or lack of treatment may leave you feeling unsure of what to do. We can help bring clarity. In a short period of time, you will come away with the confidence in knowing whether or not surgery will be the right decision for you.
4. Through our partnership, you will learn how to independently manage your condition for life. Through an understanding of the effects of posture on your body, knowing what exercises to perform to prevent reinjury, and a detailed plan, we guide you back to a return to your previous pain-free activities.
